Heating All Around

Basically there are two types of baseboard heaters.  There are the Electric Baseboard Heaters and Hydronic Baseboard Heaters.   Hydronic units heat use a combination of convectional and radiant heat, that is to say they pump hot water into thin fins that radiate heat to heat the air and send it into the room.  The boiler for this system can be fueled by natural gas, propane, or even electricity.  Some of the advantages for this type of heater are that it is energy efficient, silent , and allows for close temperature control.  This type of heater needs to remain unobstructed and may cause some issues with placement of furniture and curtains. Care should be taken with any other type of heater.

Electric Baseboard Heaters use electric coils for convectional heating.  That is to say that they draw in cool air and send heated air into the room.  They are often considered the number one choice for cost effective installation.   Though they may be more expensive to operate, this type of heater is quiet and thus preferred for bedrooms.  Baseboard heaters are by their very design unobtrusive and fit easily with most interior design.

For a smaller room you may even want to consider using portable Electric Baseboard Heaters.  They can be easily removed from the room during the warmer months so there is no accidental use.  As with any type of heater you will need to determine the size of the heater you need, which is dependent on the size of the room and whether or not there is a window in the room.

Baseboard  heaters are usually placed under a window to counteract the heat loss that occurs there. Because standard heating practice is to supply heat at the perimeter of the house, it's rare that you will need this type of heater  for any of the interior walls.  If you look on the web for a review of brands and types of Electric Baseboard Heaters then you will find that there is a wide range of prices depending on your needs.  The quality of these heaters varies as widely as the price ranges and you will find that the cheaper models can be noisy and fail at giving proper temperature control.
